What Barotse is
Barotse is an independent travel-intelligence guide to Barotseland — the Lozi floodplain kingdom of western Zambia. It covers three destinations (Liuwa Plain, Upper Zambezi, Sioma Ngwezi) and one cultural event (the Kuomboka ceremony), with practical, season-aware information.
What Barotse is not
- It is not a tour operator and does not own or run any camp or lodge.
- It does not publish fixed prices as fact; rates are set by operators and change seasonally. Figures here are indicative and must be confirmed.
- It does not claim to be an authority on Lozi culture; coverage of traditions is summarised for travellers and may be incomplete.
Referral & disclosure
As of 2026-09-23, none of the outbound operator links on this site is a paid placement. Barotse earns nothing when you book through them. We name operators because they are the ones who actually work in the places described — not because of any arrangement. If and when a referral agreement is signed, it will be disclosed on the page where the link appears and listed here; this paragraph is generated from the site's own partner list rather than written by hand, so it cannot fall out of step with reality.
Barotse is not a tour operator and does not take bookings, hold deposits, or act as an agent for any camp. Where you see an operator named, the booking is direct with them and their terms apply.
Sources & verification
Destination facts (seasons, access, closures, fees) are summarised from operator and park information and are checked against current sources before publication. Because these details change — camps open and close, fees are revised by park authorities — dates and figures carry an "as of" note and should be confirmed with the operator. Where a figure cannot be verified, it is marked as such rather than stated as fact.
Corrections
If something here is wrong or out of date, tell us via /contact. Corrections are reviewed and, where justified, updated with a new "updated" date. If a correction conflicts with an operator's or authority's own published figure, the authority's figure takes precedence.
Every photograph on this site is a photograph of the place it illustrates, used under the licence shown and credited below. Images are stored and served from this site — nothing is hot-linked from another server — and each entry is re-verified against the Wikimedia Commons API by a script before publication, so a caption cannot drift away from the picture it describes. Attribution is a condition of the CC BY and CC BY-SA licences; the public-domain and CC0 images are credited anyway.
